Editorial policy

How we research, fact-check and update every guide on Investing Desk.

What we publish

We publish plain-English explanations of how investing works in the UK: accounts such as ISAs and pensions, the products you can hold in them, and what they cost. We explain how things work so you can make your own decisions. We do not tell you what to invest in, and nothing on this site is personal financial advice.

Where our facts come from

Every figure, limit and rule in a guide is checked against a primary source before it is published. That means the body that sets or enforces the rule, such as GOV.UK, HM Revenue & Customs, the Financial Conduct Authority, the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, or a provider's own published terms. Each guide lists the sources it was checked against at the bottom of the page.

We don't rely on other comparison or news sites for facts. Where something is a matter of opinion or interpretation, we say so.

Dates on every guide

Each guide shows two dates: when it was last updated, and when its facts were last checked against the sources. Tax years, allowances and fees change, so we re-check guides when the rules change and at least once a year.

Corrections

If you spot an error, email info@investingdesk.co.uk. We correct factual errors promptly and update the guide's dates when we do.

Commercial independence

How we make money never decides what a guide says. See our disclosure page for how the site is funded.

Who writes our guides

Every guide has a named author. You can read about them on our writers page. Our editor writes under a pen name to keep their investing writing separate from their day job; everything we say about their experience and background is true.
